Hi, I am sorry to hear your mom is suffering from kidney dialysis and hope she feels better now. Dialysis is a medical procedure used to help failed kidneys to cleanse blood. It is a renal replacement therapy and is commonly called “Artificial Kidney” in some areas. It replaces damaged kidneys to purify blood, but can not work as well as healthy kidneys, so during or after dialysis, patients always experience a series of physical discomforts. For the shiver, it is not rare among dialysis patients.

For dialysis patients, they might experience shiver due to the cold dialysate or malfunctioning thermostat, as this might cause them to feel cold. Another common cause for shiver is infection which not only cause shiver, but also fever. Shiver is just one of the side effect or complication of dialysis. Besides it, there are many others like low blood pressure, headache, chest pain, itching, muscle cramps, nausea and vomiting. If not managed well, some of them are even life-threatening.

For your mom, you can help to take her body temperature to see if she is suffering fever during dialysis. If yes, then maybe she gets infection and if no, other causes should be put into consideration. Additional, shiver is just one of the side effect of dialysis, so please be alert and try to prevent other discomforts during or after dialysis, so as to improve her life quality.
