Details: Hi, I am a diabetic for 10 years. Latest report shows creatinine level 1.6, albumin in urine ++. How serious is the matter?

In medicine, serum creatinine level is tested to learn about kidney condition, because kidney damage is always marked by elevation of creatinine level in blood. Reference value of serum creatinine level is 0.5-1.3mg/dL. Your creatinine level is 1.6, which is high and this mean your kidney function has been impaired.

Besides, for diabetics, presence of albumin in urine indicates kidney problem. Albumin is the most common protein found in the blood. Normally, while flows through kidney with blood, it can be preserved in the body. However, when kidney structure is damaged, it will leak into urine.

Suggestions for you:

1. Please control your blood sugar in normal range. This will helps to protect residual kidney tissues and thus slow down illness progression.

2. Your kidneys have been severely damaged and at least a half of your kidney function has been impaired. Therefore, you need to take effective treatment as soon as possible to strengthen your kidney. This will help to stop further illness progression and thus help you prevent dialysis and kidney transplant. In addition, you must be sure your current treatment is able to help you achieve this treatment goal and if it can not, please try other treatment.

3. Since you have albumin ++, so please limit your protein intake. You can try to eat some foods with the high quality protein like egg white, fish and milk. Please be attention: high quality protein does not mean large amounts of protein. High quality protein refers to protein that can be fully consumed by our body. This kind of protein can provide us with essential amino-acid and meanwhile add less burden on kidney.

All in all, your illness is not serious enough to deprive your life, but if you fail to stop its progression, your life will be shortened. Effective treatment not only helps you reduce albumin in your urine, but also reduce your creatinine level 1.6. Therefore, taking effective treatment is imperative for you.
