Details: Hi, my father was on his third session of hemodialysis. I noticed the first session went well, but on the second session and third session, he had fever and chill. Is this normal?

Hi, hemodialysis is used to replace damaged kidneys to cleanse blood and it can cause many side effects. For your father, he may suffer from fever and chill due to:

-Infection or septicemia

-Cold dialysate or malfunctioning thermostat

-Pyrogenic reaction

All these problems can cause fever and chill during or after dialysis. For your father, we need to firstly help him find out the root cause and then we can know how to help him solve this problem fundamentally.

Besides, hemodialysis as of now is the quickest way to get polluted blood cleansed. It is required and also a must for these whose kidneys have shut down completely and meanwhile there are high levels of toxins in blood. It is really helpful, but it is a double-edged sword, because it always cause many terrible side effects. Fever and chill are just two common side effects of hemodialysis. Besides them, problems like low blood pressure, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, skin itching, headache, chest pain and muscle cramps also can be caused during or after dialysis session.

Hemodialysis is helpful, but survival rate of dialysis patients decreases over time. For this reason, many patients delay dialysis as much as possible and some others prefer to die rather than do dialysis. However, actually, dialysis is not a must for many patients. For these who still have good urine output, they have great chance to get their illness reversed and thus avoid dialysis.

For your father, you can send his latest test report to us: chinakidneytherapy@gmail.com , we will help to analyze it to see if there is chance to him stop dialysis or reduce dialysis frequency. Fever and chill are side effects of hemodialysis, so as long as he stops hemodialysis, all the related problems are avoided naturally.
