GFR 19, Creatinine 3.2: How Bad Is This

Posted:by kidneytc Time:2015-09-08 13:58

Topics: CKD Treatment Creatinine GFR

Details: GFR is 19 and creatinine is 3.2. How bad is this?

Expert Answer

Normally, GFR is above 90 and reference value for serum creatinine level is 0.5-1.3mg/dL. GFR 19 is much lower and creatinine level 3.2 is much higher than normal value.

Both GFR and serum creatinine level are indicators of kidney function:

GFR is the abbreviation of Glomerular Filtration Rate which describe flow rate of blood filtered by kidney. Low GFR means kidneys can not filter blood as well as they did before. In medicine, Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is divided into 5 stages according to GFR and stage 4 is marked by GFR 15-29.

Creatinine is one of the wastes produced in the body. This substance pass through kidney freely while flowing through kidney with blood. Therefore, as long as our kidneys work normally to filter blood, serum creatinine level can be kept in a normal range. High serum creatinine 3.2 means renal filtration function has been severely impaired. According to clinical studies, serum creatinine level goes up when about a half of kidney function is affected, so creatinine level 3.2 means more than a half of kidney function has already been impaired.

Although GFR 19 and creatinine 3.2 means serious illness condition, please do not worry, there is treatment to reverse illness. In a damaged kidney, there are three groups of kidney tissues: healthy kidney tissues, injured kidney tissues and dead kidney tissues. For dead kidney tissues, they can not be brought back to life again and there is nothing we can do. However, for injured kidney tissues, they can be repaired well. If your current treatment can not help you stop illness progression or reverse illness to better condition, please leave us message below, our expert will contact you in 24 hours to help you with your illness condition.
