Advice for proteinuria caused by type 1 Diabetes:

-Adjust his protein intake

He has protein in urine means his kidney structure is damaged. In such a case, high protein intake will further damage kidney and aggravate proteinuria. You said his creatinine level is normal, which means his kidney damage is not severely. Under such a condition, his protein intake can be limited to 0.6g per kilogram of body weight per day. Also, high quality protein like lean meat, egg white, fish and milk is recommended for him.

-Control his blood sugar in normal range

Uncontrolled high blood sugar is the real cause of kidney damage in Diabetic Nephropathy which refers to kidney problem caused by Diabetes. For your husband, presence of protein in urine means his kidneys have been damaged. Under such a condition, uncontrolled high blood sugar level will accelerate his kidney problem to kidney failure stage. Therefore, please help him control his blood sugar in normal range.

-Tight control of blood sugar

Healthy kidneys help us regulate blood pressure. For your husband, his kidneys have been damaged, so he runs high risk for high blood pressure. If his blood pressure is elevated, please take hypotensive drugs to reduce blood pressure in normal range, because persistent high blood pressure is also harmful for kidney.

Treatment for his illness condition:

When he goes to doctor, he might be prescribed some oral tablets to control his proteinuria. These oral tablets are helpful, but they only control proteinuria and do nothing for the improvement of kidney function. His protein in urine might be reduced by the medicine, but when he stops taking medicine or when he reduces medicine dose, proteinuria relapses.

Proteinuria is a symptom of kidney disease and if we want to get this problem eliminated fundamentally, treatment should focus on repairing kidney damages, so as to restore kidney function. When kidneys work normally, proteinuria disappears.
