What Is The Treatment for Edema in Chronic Kidney Disease

Edema is a common symptom in Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). If it is not under good control, various discomforts will occur. Thus, the treatment becomes necessary. Well then, what is the treatment for edema in CKD?

Firstly we should have a brief introduction of the cause of edema, which is divided into two kinds, one is the damaged glomerular filtration which can not eliminate extra water and sodium. Another one is protein in urine, which means severe leakage of protein in urine, can also lead to edema. Edema also can be a side effect of some medications, including steroid drugs, estrogens, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, high blood pressure medications, certain diabetes medications called thiazolidinediones.

For the medication side effects, when you stop using them, the edema will disappear. Today we will discuss the treatment for edema of chronic disease.

More severe edema may be treated with some drugs to help you to expel excess fluid in urine. One of the most common diuretics is furosemide or Lasix in short. And some medications treat pitting edema caused by heavy loss of protein in urine including ACE inhibitors (angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors) and angiotensin receptor blockers (ARB's). With the using of these drugs, patients should limit their water intake, protein intake. Too much water or protein will burden the kidney and make the drugs useless.

Meanwhile, patients should take a balanced diet. Reducing the salt ingestion can also do some help. Some herbs like wolfberry, meadowsweet and turmeric all can be used to help to reduce edema, but, please do use them with the professional direction of your healthcare provider.

Micro-Chinese Medicine Osmotherapy also shows its ability in edema improvement, so does in enhancing renal function. This therapy is an unique Chinese medicine treatment in our hospital. It is used externally and two medicated bags are placed on patient’s kidney area. Patients just need to lie on bed to take this therapy. It is very comfortable and causes no side effects. The osmosis machine helps the active ingredients come into kidney lesion directly. Through dilating blood vessels, improving blood circulation, preventing inflammation and coagulation, degrading extracellular matrix and providing nutrients, it helps stimulate the self-healing ability of injured kidney tissues and improve renal function. With the recovery of renal function, excessive fluid is expelled naturally itself, edema can be cured progressively.
