How To Eat With Kidney Failure At Christmas

Christmas is approaching. It should be a joyous time. An unfortunate reality, however, is that Christmas feast is most feared by kidney failure patients on a special diet, their family members and members of the health-care team. Well then, how to eat with renal failure at Christmas?

How To Eat With Kidney Failure At Christmas1. Avoid high sodium foods

Processed foods such as ham, smoked chicken or turkey, sausages, canned meats/fish or vegetables, ice cream, salted fish/pig’s tail/beef, soy sauce and ketchup should be avoided because sodium is used as a preservative to process these foods.

2. Avoid rich potassium foods

Foods with high potassium should be avoided including papaya, coconut water and jelly, sweetsop, soursop, custurd apple, ripe banana, guava, pomegranate, dried fruits like mixed peel, mixed fruit, cherries and raisins. Vegetables such as mushroom, beetroot, canned mixed vegetables should be avoided. Besides, fatty foods such as ham fat, bacon, ackee, avocado, and salted butter and salted margarine should be limited because of their high potassium and/or sodium content.

3. Eat unprocessed meats

Unprocessed meats are recommended for kidney failure patients including chicken, goat, fish, turkey, pork and lamb. If you eat white rice, you should choose white rice with adding herbs, curry powder and prepare without coconut milk. Vegetables such as cucumber, raw cabbage lettuce, string beans, okra and sweet pepper are good for renal patients.

Renal failure patients can choose fruits such as tangerine and watermelon, drink cranberry juice, grape juice nad sorrel and eat staple foods such as white rice, white flour and its products (bread, crackers, macaroni), white sugar/honey, old fashioned/rolled oats, refined cornmeal and green banana, Irish potatoes.

4. Choose natural seasonings

Renal patients should choose some natural seasonings such as onion, scallion, garlic, pimento, pepper, lime/lemon and fresh vegetables rather than salt, powered seasonings, soy sauce and ketchup. Furthermore, white or granulated sugar or honey should be used to sweeten instead of brown sugar, molasses and wet sugar.
