Can Stage 3 Kidney Failure Patients Eat Watermelon

Can Stage 3 Kidney Failure Patients Eat Watermelon“I like eating watermelons in summer, but I was told to have stage 3 Kidney Failure last week. So is it ok for me to eat watermelon again?” I got this question from one of my Facebook friends. We all know when there is something goes wrong with our kidney, we need to be careful abotu foods we eat everyday, because improper diet will add extra burden on kidney and accelerate illness progression. Well, for a stage 3 kidney failure patient, is watermelon ok?

When it comes to stage 3 kidney failure and watermelon, the following suggestions will be helpful:

1. Stay away from watermelon if you are experiencing fluid retention

Stage 3 kidney failure refers to mild decline of kidney function and patients begin to experience various symptoms like fatigue and foamy urine and so on. Fluid retention which is also called swelling or edema is alos a common complain. Watermelon is water-rich fruit. For stage 3 kidney failure patients who have fluid retention, they are not suggested to eat watermelon, so as to avoid further worsening of edema.

2. If your stage 3 kidney failure is caused by diabetes, watermelon is not recommended

For stage 3 kidney failure patients, if their kidney is affected due to years of uncontrolled Diabetes, watermelon is not a good fruit option. Besides, when we ingest too much sugar at one time, our kidneys have to work more hardly to get excess sugar out of the body through kidney, so eating watermelon actually increase kidney burden, which is not good for stage 3 kidney failure patients to get recovery.

Watermelon is a good fruit option for people to quench their thirst in summer. Also, owing to its high vitamin, high minerals, high antioxidants and low amount of calories, it is deeply loved by all the people, especially for children. It is a health-benefitical in many ways, but this does not mean it is available for all the people. For patients with stage 3 kidney failure, if they have the above two conditions, they need to avoid eating or eating too much watermelon, so as to have a tight control of illness condition.
