Is Diarrhea A Symptom of Stage 5 Kidney Failure

People with stage 5 kidney failure usually experience lots of physical discomforts and some of them may find they suffer from diarrhea easily after the diagnosis. Well, is diarrhea a symptom of stage 5 kidney failure?

Yes, in some cases, onset of diarrhea is indeed related with damaged kidney. It is one of the gastrointestinal discomforts and besides it, patients may also suffer from anorexia, nausea, vomiting and they may even vomit blood if no treatment is given. Well, what causes these gastrointestinal discomforts in stage 5 kidney failure?

Stage 5 kidney failure is the worst kidney condition which may involve in any part of our body. Gastrointestinal discomforts like diarrhea usually appear usually due to:

1. High blood urea nitrogen level

Urea nitrogen is a waste produced in the body. Normally, it is cleared away from the body through urine and in stage 5 kidney failure, kidneys are severely damaged and can not do this job well. Consequently, urea nitrogen build up in blood, leading to high BUN. Under the effect of urea enzymes, urea nitrogen is decomposed into ammonia which stimulates intestinal mucosa, causing gastrointestinal discomforts.

2. Dysfunction of central nervous system

One of the major jobs of kidney is to filter blood and during this process, harmful substances are removed from the body. However, when kidneys fail to function properly, toxins build up in blood. When central nervous system is affected by the toxins, gastrointestinal discomforts might be caused.

3. Gastrointestinal bleeding

Another cause for gastrointestinal discomforts like diarrhea in stage 5 kidney failure is gastrointestinal bleeding which can be caused by gastric mucosal erosion and peptic ulcer.
