Why does Edema Occur in Patients with Kidney Failure

Why does Edema Occur in Patients with Kidney FailureAs we know, edema/ swelling is a common symptom for patients with kidney failure, which means fluid retention in body, and the unwell controlled edema will cause further damage to kidneys. Edema is usually occurs under eyelids, in ankles, legs, etc, then why does edema occur in patients with kidney failure? In this article, we will help kidney failure patients to resolve this question.

There are two common causes that can cause edema in patients with kidney failure, one is heavy loss of protein in urine, another is impaired kidney function.

1. A heavy loss of protein in urine

Since kidneys have the function of filtering toxins and wastes in blood, it can also help keep the nutrition from leaking out into urine. However, for kidney failure patients, they kidneys have been damaged, so they will have the symptom of proteinuria, which means loss of protein in urine. The heavy loss of protein will cause the reduction in the concentration of albumin in blood, and the loss of protein in urine will cause the blood volume reduced and the reduction of fluid in blood vessels will occur. In this condition, the fluid will move into the interstitial spaces, which will cause edema/swelling.

For this condition, kidney failure patients need to keep a low protein diet and limit their salt intake, besides, they can also take some ACE inhibitors and angiotensin receptor blockers, which can help control the loss of protein in urine.

2. Impaired kidney function

Since the kidney function is reduced, the excess fluid will fail to remove out from urine, which will cause edema in body, and the failed kidney function will also cause sodium building up in blood, and this will also cause swelling. So the most cause of edema for kidney failure patients is the reduced kidney function.

Therefore, kidney failure patients should have effective treatment to remedy their kidney disease and improve their kidney function, which can help relieve the edema fundamentally.
