Is There Any Connection Between High Creatinine and Low Hemoglobin

One with high creatinine level in blood may have low hemoglobin level. Why is this? Is there any connection between them?

What does high creatinine level mean?

In medicine, high creatinine level indicates kidney problem and generally, the higher the serum creatinine level, the severer the kidney problem is.

Normally, serum creatinine level fluctuates in the range of 0.5-1.3mg/dL or 44-133umol/L. When there are too much creatinine in blood, kidneys will remove them out of the body through urine. Many conditions can cause slightly elevation of serum creatinine level, but in kidney disease, creatinine level keeps increasing and when it goes up to a certain level, dialysis or kidney transplant is required to keep blood clean, so as to protect other internal organs from being damaged.

What does low hemoglobin level mean?

Hemoglobin is the protein contained by red blood cell which is the most common type of blood cell in our body. Low hemoglobin level means there are less red blood cells, which is an indicator of anemia.

In healthy adults, hemoglobin level should be in the range of 110-160g/L. With low hemoglobin level, one will experience pale skin, weakness, shortness of breath, fainting, chest pain and restless legs syndrome.

Is there any connection between high creatinine and low hemoglobin

Elevation of serum creatinine level means kidneys are damaged and can not work properly. One of the major jobs of kidney is to secrete hormone like EPO(Erythropoietin) which plays an important role of the production of red blood cells. Damaged kidneys fail to secrete enough EPO, as a result, less red blood cells are produced and hemoglobin level in blood is low. That is why one with high serum ceatinine level is easily to suffer from low hemoglobin.

In kidney disease, both high creatinine level and low hemoglobin level are resulted from impairment of kidney function. Thus, if we want to get these two problems eliminated permanently, we must strengthen our kidneys and increase their working ability. There are various treatment for kidney disease in different stage in medicine. Before you take any treatment, you should firstly learn about your kidney condition and then take the most suitable one.
