What Creatinine Level Means Kidney Failure

What Creatinine Level Means Kidney FailureCreatinine level in blood reflects kidney condition, so what creatinine level means kidney failure?

What is kidney failure?

Kidney failure is always used to describe the worst kidney condition in medicine. Kidney is an important organ that helps to us maintain the normal life by producing urine, purifying blood, regulating blood pressure, keeping electrolyte balance and secreting necessary hormone. Kidney failure means kidneys fail to do these work properly. In medicine, kidney failure is define according to GFR (Glomerular Filtration Membrane) and it is diagnosed when GFR is detected to be lower than 15.

High creatinine level and kidney function

Creatinine level is said to be able to reflect kidney condition because creatinine is a substance that needs to be removed out of the body by kidney. Elevation of creatinine level in blood means kidneys can not do this job well. Therefore, usually, the higher the creatinine level in blood is, the poorer the kidney condition is. Besides, under such a condition, actually not only creatinine, but also other toxins can not be excreted by kidney. Therefore, high creatinine level implies serious condition.

What creatinine level means kidney failure?

Normal serum creatinine level should fluctuates in range from 0.5 to 1.3mg/dL. Creatinine level is proportional to the level of toxins in the blood, so when creatinine level increases to a certain level, dialysis or kidney transplant will be suggested to keep blood clean. In general, dialysis is suggested when serum creatinine is higher than 5 and meanwhile patients are suffering severe physical discomforts caused by kidney damage like nausea, vomiting, skin itching and pulmonary edema. Therefore, we can say one is in kidney failure stage if his serum creatinine level is higher than 5 and at the same time patient are experiencing severe gastrointestinal discomforts, skin problem and serious fluid retention.
