Clinical manifestation of heart failure

The followings are the most common clinical manifestation of heart failure. If any dialysis patients are experiencing these problems, they need to talk with doctor immediately, so as to find out if there is something goes wrong with their heart.

1. Shortness of breath, breath with difficulty, cough, pink and frothy sputum.

2. High blood pressure, increased heart rate, being upset.

3. Severe swelling in face and limbs, reduced urine output, anuria.

4. Oppression in chest, labored breathing and having difficulty in breath while lying on bed.

5. Obvious increase of body weight during dialysis interval.

How to prevent heart failure for dialysis patients?

The following measures help dialysis patients prevent or delay the onset of heart failure effectively:

1. Strict fluid and salt intake.

For dialysis patients, the fluid intake every day should be = yesterday’s urine output + 500ml. For example, if the urine output is 700ml today, tomorrow’s fluid intake should be 1200ml. For the salt intake, it should be 2 gram a day for dialysis patients who have no urine output and 3-4 gram a day for these who have urine output more than 500ml.

2. Control body weight

Ask your doctor to help you calculate your dry body weight and during dialysis interval, the weight gain should not be exceed 5% of the dry weight. For an instance, if a patient’s dry weight is 45kg, then his body weight increased during dialysis interval should be limited in 2.25kg.

3. Protect heart

Avoid being emotional and heavy physical labor. Also, regular and mild physical exercises are recommended.

4. Tight control of complications

Complications like high blood pressure, anemia and infection should be brought under control tightly.

5. Healthy lifestyle

No smoking, no drinking of alcohol and no staying up at night.
