Will ESRD Cause Osteoporosis

Will ESRD Cause OsteoporosisESRD patients always have to face various health tissues, because every part of our body might be involved when kidneys shut down. Well, is it possible for ESRD patients to have bone problem? Will ESRD cause osteoporosis?

As for this question, the answer is “Yes”. ESRD is an illness regarding kidney, but it indeed increases risk for osteoporosis.

ESRD is the abbreviation of End Stage Renal Disease which is the worst kidney condition. Healthy kidneys help to purify blood, secrete necessary hormone and maintain electrolyte balance. When kidneys are severely damaged and fail to work properly, electrolyte disturbance is caused. The most common electrolyte imbalance include hyperphosphatemia and hypocalcemia, both of which can cause hyperparathyroidism, leading to increase of PTH (parathyroid hormone). PTH works on bone and makes bone release calcium to the blood to alleviate hypocalcemia. This increases risk for osteoporosis.

Besides, the hormone form of vitamin D, 1.25-dyhydroxyvitamin D3 (1.25(OH)2D3) promote the absorption of our body to the calcium. In ESRD, renal tubules are severely damaged, which restrain the synthesis of 1.25(OH)2D3. As a result of this, calcium in blood decreases severely and this also contributes to osteoporosis.

Also, with ESRD, we need to be careful about foods we eat, so as to avoid adding extra burden on kidney. Under such a condition, we may stay away from many high calcium foods. Therefore, strict diet limitation also plays a role for hypocalcemia and osteoporosis.

With osteoporosis, a series of bone problems like bone pain and bone fracture are caused easily. In such a case, medical condition and proper diet changes are needed to alleviate it or cure it, so as to avoid further health tissues.

Osteoporosis is just one of the complications of ESRD and besides it, there are many others like anemia and cardiovascular disease. If we want to prevent or alleviate these problems permanently, treatment for the improvement of kidney function should be an important step.
