Protein Intake for one with ESRD

Protein Intake for one with ESRD ESRD(End Stage Renal Disease) is a kidney problem which not only needs us to take medical treatment, but also needs us to make diet changes. Protein intake is a matter in ESRD, because improper protein intake might cause further health tissues. Well, what is the protein intake for one with ESRD?

What is ESRD?

ESRD is the abbreviation of End Stage Renal Disease which is a medical term used to describe the worst kidney condition. Healthy kidneys help to cleanse blood, regulate blood pressure, maintain electrolyte balance and secrete hormone. However, in ESRD, kidneys have been severely damaged and they can not do their job well. That is why ESRD patients might experience various physical discomforts and health tissues.

What is the protein intake for one with ESRD?

Protein intake should be regulated because both ingesting too much protein and too little protein are bad. Severely damaged kidneys can not do as well as they did before. The end metabolic waste of protein is urea nitrogen which is a waste that needs to be removed by kidney. In ESRD, high protein intake will elevate blood urea nitrogen (BUN) level, which is bad for kidney. However, if ESRD patients supply less protein to their body, they are easily to suffer from hypoproteinemia and other related health tissues. Therefore, a proper protein intake is very important.

Generally speaking, for ESRD patients who have not start dialysis, they need to limit their protein intake to 0.2g per kilogram of body weight per day. However, if they are on dialysis, they need to ingest much more protein to replenish the one lost during dialysis. At that time, 1.2 gram of protein per kilogram of body weight is needed a day.

Besides, about 60% of the protein for ESRD patients are highly recommended to be high quality protein which can be found in lean meat, egg white, fish and meat. High quality protein can be fully used in our body. Different from general protein, high quality protein produces less wastes, which helps to reduce kidney burden.
