What Should Be the Diet Plan in ESRD

What Should Be the Diet Plan in ESRDDiet plan is also an important part in ESRD (End Stage Renal Disease) because improper diet increase kidney burden, which might cause further illness progression. Well, what should be the diet plan in ESRD?

ESRD is the worst kidney condition in which kidneys have lost most of their ability to help us maintain the normal life activity. That is why ESRD patients always have lots of physical discomforts. In our daily life, before making diet for one with ESRD, we need to firstly know the following information.

1. Proper protein intake

Both ingesting too much and too little protein are harmful. For an individual with End Stage Renal Disease, his protein intake should be based on his specific illness condition. In general, if he is on dialysis, he needs to increase protein intake to 1.2 gram per kilogram of body weight per day. However, if he have not start dialysis, protein intake should be limited to 0.2 g per kilogram of body weight per day.

2. Reduce salt intake

High salt diet is harmful for ESRD patients because salt is rich in sodium and high sodium intake will elevate blood pressure and trigger fluid retention. To reduce salt intake, foods like bacon, pickles, sauces, some snakes and processed foods.

3. Eat more high calcium foods

High calcium foods are always recommended for ESRD patients, as this help to prevent or alleviate bone problems. One of the functions of kidney is to maintain electrolyte balance and when kidneys are severely damaged, phosphorus level in blood increases, which stops our body from getting enough calcium. Persistent low calcium level in blood increases risk for bone problem.

4. Avoid high potassium foods

ESRD patients are at high risk for hyperkalemia which is very harmful for our heart. For this reason, foods high in potassium should be excluded from dining-table. In our daily diet, foods like banana, spinach, white beans, white mushroom and avocados all are high potassium foods that should be avoided by ESRD patients.

5. Soup intake should be avoided

For ESRD patients, no matter they are on dialysis or not, their fluid intake also should be limited , so as to avoid further health tissues.

Diet plan is also an important part in the treatment for ESRD, but we can not get recovery by making diet changes. To get improvement on kidney function, treatment like Micro-Chinese Medicine Osmotherapy, Immunotherapy, Blood Pollution Therapy, Circle Therapy, Medicated Bath, Foot Bath and Acupuncture should be used.
