What Precaution Should We Take In Diet With ESRD

ESRD is the abbreviation of End Stage Renal Disease which is a life-threatening condition. We need to make diet changes with diagnosis of ESRD, because proper diet plan will help us avoid some unexpected problems. Well, what precaution should we take in diet with ESRD?

In ESRD, kidneys have lost almost all their working ability, so the diet must be good for kidney. Based on this principle, the following suggestions should be put into consideration while making diet plan.

1. Low-sodium intake

Kidneys are not able to work properly to eliminate excess sodium in cases of ESRD, under such a condition, high sodium intake not only adds extra burden on kidney, but also elevates blood pressure. Therefore, sodium intake should be limited, which needs patients to stay far away from high sodium foods like salted foods because salt is the most common source of sodium.

2. Proper protein intake

Protein intake should be regulate based on specific illness condition. Generally speaking, if patients undergo dialysis, they need to increase protein intake to 1.2g of per kilogram of body weight. However, if they are not on dialysis, protein intake should be limited to 0.2g/k/d. Additional, high quality protein which can be found in egg white, fish, lean meat and milk is always recommended.

3. Low-potassium intake

ESRD increases risk for hyperkalemia which is very harmful for our heart, so potassium intake should be limited. In our daily life, high potassium foods include banana, spinach, avocado, white mushroom, salmon, and white beans and so on.

4. High calcium and low phosphorus diet

Foods high in calcium and low in phosphorus are also recommended. This will helps to prevent bone problems like bone pain, bone fracture and even osteoporosis.

5. High-fiber diet

Ingesting enough fiber helps to prevent constipation which is a common problem among ESRD patients who are taking peritoneal dialysis.

Lastly, it is really hard to give an exact recipe which is good for all the ESRD patients. Due to the difference of illness and physical condition, exact diet plan is different from case to case. If you want to get specific suggestions on diet for ESRD, please email us your illness condition, we will reply with individual advice.
