Is Dialysis Required When GFR Is 34

GFR (Glomerular Filtration Rate) is an indicator of kidney function. Normally, GFR is higher than 90 and a low GFR means low kidney function. Kidney works as a filter in our body and when it is damaged and can not help of purify blood, dialysis is required to keep blood clean. Well, is dialysis required when GFR is 34?

Is dialysis required when GFR is 34?

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is divided into 5 stages according to GFR. In CKD stage 1, GFR is still higher than 90, but with pathological changes can be observed with related tests. In CKD stage 2, GFR is decreased to the range of 60-89 and if no treatment is given, illness will develops to stage 3 which is marked by GFR 30-59. Stage 4 CKD is always accompanied with lots of symptoms. In this stage, GFR is in the range of 15-29, which means kidney function has been severely impaired. CKD stage 5 is diagnosed when GFR becomes lower than 15.

GFR 34 means CKD is in stage 3. In such a case, patients become to experience various symptoms like high blood pressure, tiredness, swelling, proteinuria, blood urine and back pain. Although kidneys have been severely affected in such a case, dialysis is still not required.

At what level of GFR, is dialysis required?

Dialysis is required to replace damaged kidneys to purify blood. Generally speaking, dialysis is recommended when GFR is lower than 15 and it becomes a must when GFR is lower than 10.

Besides, GFR is just one of the factors that help to decide when dialysis is needed. Besides it, serum creatinine level and clinical manifestations also should be put into consideration. Creatinine is a waste that needed to be removed by kidney, so impairment of kidney function is always accompanied with elevation of serum creatinine level. Dialysis is considered when serum creatinine level is higher than 5 and meanwhile patients are experiencing a series of problems like heart failure, severe skin itching, vomiting and pulmonary edema.

For one with GFR 34, although his kidneys have been severely damaged, there is great chance for him to reverse illness and avoid dialysis. If you want to learn about the related treatment, please leave us message, our nephrologists will help to make individual treatment plan for you.
