Why Does Edema Occur in Nephrotic Syndrome

Why Does Edema Occur in Nephrotic SyndromeWhy does edema occur in Nephrotic Syndrome? Edema is also called swelling and it is formed when excess fluid is trapped in the body’s tissues. Edema can be caused by a number of medical conditions and Nephrotic Syndrome is one of the serious causes. Nephrotic Syndrome is a kidney problem marked by mass protein in urine. Well, how is it associated with edema?

Why does edema occur in Nephrotic Syndrome?

Edema is one of the visible symptoms of Nephrotic Syndrome and it becomes more and more serious with the deterioration of Nephrotic Syndrome.

Nephrotic Syndrome is the kidney problem that causes severe protein leakage. Protein is the basic of life and should be consumed in our body. For some reason, large amounts of protein lost through urine, leading to hypoproteinemia. Due to low protein level in blood, plasma osmotic pressure decreases. As a result, large amounts of fluids are trapped in the body’s tissues and then edema occurs.

Management of edema in Nephrotic Syndrome

In Nephrotic Syndrome, when edema becomes very serious, patients can take some diuretics to get excess fluids out of the body. In medicine, there are different types of diuretics such as potassium-sparing diuretics, loop diuretics and osmotic diuretics. Patients should choose the right one according to their illness condition, so as to avoid unnecessary health tissues.

Besides, aside from using diuretics, Nephrotic Syndrome patients also need to tightly control proteinuria, since the severity of edema is proportional to the severity of protein leakage.

Also, in daily life, they need to have a low-salt diet and meanwhile limit fluid intake. This will help to prevent deterioration of edema.

Lastly, in Nephrotic Syndrome, edema appears due to severity protein leakage, so only when kidney function is improved, and protein leakage is stopped, can edema problem be solved permanently.
