Is Veganism A Beneficial Diet For PKD Patients

Is veganism a beneficial diet for patients with Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD). A proper diet is an important part in kidney disease treatment. Here I will tell you whether veganism is good for PKD patients.

Is Veganism A Beneficial Diet For PKD Patients

People with PKD who get protein mainly from vegetarian sources rather than meat may find it easier to maintain the proper phosphorus balance while consuming the same amount of phosphorus. Healthy kidneys are responsible for clearing excess phosphorus from the body, but they cannot do this properly in people with PKD and any other type of kidney disease. Thus, it can be a healthy choice for PKD Patients to follow a vegetarian diet. However, speak with your doctor to determine the best foods to include on such a diet given your current health situation.

Foods to eat

Consume some of your protein from whole grains because the phosphorus in these grains is at least partly in the form of phytates which people do not absorb very efficiently. Foods such as eggs, veggie burgers, tofu, cottage cheese and seitan are good protein sources but they are low in phosphorus.

Foods to avoid or limited

People with certain types of kidney disease such as Nephrotic Syndrome, chronic kidney failure and polycystic kidney disease should follow a low protein diet, which can be easier to do when following a vegetarian diet. If PKD patients have already been on dialysis, they may need a higher protein diet due to protein losses during dialysis treatments. Besides, those with kidney disease may also need to restrict phosphorus and potassium levels.

High phosphorus foods like nuts, cheese, dried beans, peas, milk, soy milk, yogurt, nut better and edamame should be limited if you have kidney disease.

You may also need to pay attention to potassium intake. Apricots, avocados, oranges, potatoes, pumpkin, prune juice, spinach, tomatoes, sweet potatoes and winter squash may also be limited.

Only a proper diet is not enough. The most important thing for PKD patients is to shrink kidney cysts and repair injured kidney tissues as well as improve renal function. Micro-Chinese Medicine Osmotherapy can help you achieve this purpose.
