Can Fish Be Consumed by Kidney Disease Patients with Proteinuria

Can Fish Be Consumed by Kidney Disease Patients with ProteinuriaProteinuria refers to urine with excess protein. This is an abnormal condition, and helps to reflect health condition. Kidney disease is a common cause for proteinuria and when this problem is caused, some foods should be avoided, so as to avoid further harms on kidney. Well, can fish be consumed by kidney disease patients with proteinuria?

When it comes to fish and kidney disease, there are two points we need to notice:

1. Fish is recommended for kidney disease patients with proteinuria

For kidney disease patients who have been detected with protein in urine, regular consumption of fish is recommended. Fish is high in protein and it contains high quality protein which is any food source rich in protein and nutrients and containing little or no cholesterol or saturated fats. This kind of protein can provide us with necessary nutrients and meanwhile produce less wastes that need to be removed by kidney. For this reason, fish is recommended.

2. Intake of fish for kidney disease patients should be limited

Although fish is a food good for kidney disease patients, but to prevent the worsening of proteinuria, the intake of it should be limited according to specific illness condition.

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is divided into 5 stages according to GFR (Glomerular Filtration Rate). In general, if illness condition is in stage 1 or stage 2, protein intake should be limited to 0.8g per kilogram of body weight per day. When illness progresses to stage 3, 0.6 g/k/d is needed and if illness is in stage 4, only 0.4 g/k/d is allowed. However, if kidney disease has developed to kidney failure stage, 0.2g/k/d is allowed if patients have not start dialysis and for these who are on dialysis, they need to increase their protein intake to 1.2g/k/d.

Diet changes are needed when one is affected by kidney disease, so as to avoid aggravating proteinuria. However, this does not mean proteinuria can be cured just by eating some fish and avoiding some foods bad for kidney. In kidney disease, protein leak into urine due to damaged kidney structure, so if we want to get this problem permanently eliminated, repairing damaged kidney structure is necessary.
